All of Helena's certainty – about her boyfriend Luke, about God – masks her deep-seated uncertainty. More confident in Luke's ability to lead the town than Luke himself, Helena finds herself stepping into that role in the face of conflict. Before the trip she was known as one of the popular girls. It seemed that it had carried on into New Ham as she seen as sort of a leader. Her family ran the church and she carried that on. Her father loved guns and had an arsenal in the basement.
Luke and Helena are boyfriend and girlfriend until later on in the show when he proposes to her and they become engaged to become husband and wife but after Luke tells Helena he wants to run for Mayor of New Ham, the couple get in an argument and Luke is unsure if he still wants to marry Helena but in the season finale they do remain engaged.

Helena and Allie are friends, they become closer after Allie's sister, Cassandra's death. Their relationship sometimes gets strained over their opposing views on guns, where Helena believes since Allie can't guarantee her protection, that she should be allowed to hold guns in her house.
I think most of us are here...because we miss our parents. Or our brothers and sisters. Because we're afraid. We don't know when things are gonna go back to normal. When someone is gonna come and rescue us. If anyone's gonna come and rescue us. I don't have an answer to those questions. If my mom was here I'd ask her but...The only thing I know for sure we can control is ourselves. What we do. If God still exists...and I think he does...then we need to show him that we're still worthy of his love. If we can do that...maybe we'll be saved. Because...getting drunk and, I don't know, breaking things, it might make us feel good in the moment, but in the long run? It's making us feel worse.
